Art Recipe March 2022

Hello friends,

I love the soft mood board of March Art Recipe; it is soothing and gentle, warm, and light. (I am seriously thinking of framing it into my studio wall, to remind me of good things.) So, it was very much a joy to come up with a gentle project. Which is how I ended up creating covers for a tiny little journal, only 7cm x 9cm. I wanted it to feel like dried rose petals; something fragile and delicate you almost hold your breath when you touch it and leaf through it.

Here’s how I did it.

I created the album covers from thick, heavy cardboard, and covered them with Flutter Tissue Paper, using Soft Matte Gel as glue. Then I primed it with white Heavy Gesso and painted the album with Vintage Roses Mica Powders, inside out, using Soft Matte Gel as the medium I mixed the powders in.

I also dyed the laces with the same powders and let them dry completely. Then I used Soft Matte Gel to attach crocheted vintage lace onto the cover (and ribbon for tying the journal) and let it dry again completely.

I made a simple composition using a bit of coffee dyed cheese cloth, a mica powder dyed lace bit with a clay rose bud mould and a piece of Mechanical Thistle Chipboard I cut from a larger piece. I primed the clay rose and chipboard leaf with gesso, painted them with the same Mica Powders I used earlier, and added some Ochre Matte Wax to get a dried rose look. Then I attached them with Heavy Body Gel. As the final touch I added a hint of very diluted Tiger’s Eye Stone Jewel Paste here and there to get an understated glamour into the piece.

Wishing you all the good things in the world,

Emilia

Hope Returns - Art Journaling

Hello friends,

This art journal page got inspiration from the first swans of the spring that flew by my studio window, calling their promise of spring and hope returning.

I used simple layering of papers because my journal starts to get a bit too bulky for lots of lace and dried flower layers and is in serious need of dieting. So, here’s how I made my layer diet art journal pages…

I started with applying Clear Gesso to all prints and papers and using brown ink to distress the paper edges. I glued the background papers in place and added a whitewashed layer of white Heavy Gesso on the pages, to follow with a stencil with white gesso and Iris Tapestry stencil.

I highlighted parts of the stencilled background with Mica Powders from Golden Hour set with Soft Gloss Gel, to match the background colour and framed the page edges with Liquid Acrylics Ink Black and Burnt Sienna.

Next step was to create a simple collage with the swans being the main focal point. After gluing everything in place, I added some white gesso with careless brush strokes into the white swans and flowers to make them a bit softer and added shadowing in form of Liquid Acrylics.

As the final touch, I added some Metallic Flakes with Gilding Glue, and painted the golden parts over with Liquid Acrylics, so that they don’t shout out from the otherwise worn-out pages. Oh, and I added some white and blueish-grey splashes to the pages, too.

Wishing you all things gentle and beautiful,

Art Daily Cafe March

Hello friends

Gardens are magical places, and this month’s theme inspired me to create a soft vintage style art journal page.

I layered some vintage papers on top of (coffee dyed) pages and primed everything with a light layer of white Heavy Gesso. Passiflora stencil seemed like a perfect choice for the garden theme; I used Modeling Paste to get the airy climber look.

I made collage for the pages using prints, cheese cloth, lace, and stitched a button in there, and added a quote suitable for the theme.

I added a layer of Clear Gesso to the prints to protect them, and with a very light touch of Impastos Pitch Black and Chocolate Brown, I highlighted the parts I wanted to stand out more.

Wishing you an enchanted month filled with light,

Emilia

You Are Enough Canvas

A canvas, that’s gently reminding you are enough. But it’s also a reminder that you can create what you need: all the laces are dyed with the same new release Mica Powders that is used for the whole canvas, including metal embellishments, and the frame.

There are lots of photos of this, as I love the canvas so, so much. I wanted to create something that is the essence of me - something that feels right, that pours out and is something so purely me that I don't even think what I am doing. And this is the result.

Here's a little shadow box to show how versatile the new release Mica Powders are. Not only the box and the frame, but also the lace and fabric are dyed with the powders! The vintage look of the typewriter text is made simply by adding a gentle layer of Antiquing Wax Sepia on top.

Having Home Decor Fun with Mica Powders

Hello dear Finnabair friends,

Here’s a lovely idea for using the new Finnabair Winter 2022 Mica Powders. They are easy to use and are a brilliant product for all kinds of home décor projects. I made some little home décor eggs to show an example of how-to.

I had a plastic egg made of two pieces, so I wanted to make sure I’m priming it well, so it’ll hold together. That’s why I added some tissue paper with Soft Matte Gel on top. But if you have, let’s say, a wooden décor piece, this part isn’t necessary at all.

I primed the piece with white Heavy Gesso. This makes sure the surface won’t absorb the paints etc. unevenly. Next step was making some moulds. I used air dry clay and glued the pieces immediately in place with PVA glue, and let it dry overnight. Then I primed the whole thing with gesso again for the same reason as earlier: this makes sure the whole piece reacts like I want it to with the products I’m using later.

Choose the powders you want to use and play with the colours as much as you like. I used only water for painting and sealed the whole thing with Clear Antiquing Wax later (a fixative would do nicely, too). You can, of course, use a medium that’ll do the job, too, like Soft Gloss Gel.

Mix the powder with water of Soft Matte Gel, and paint with a brush. It’s like using any normal paint. You just mix the colours you want. I added some darker shadowing onto the base of the clay ornaments. It will add a whole new depth to the decor piece.

Let dry.

Fabric and Lace Dyeing with Finnabair Mica Powders

Hello dear Finnabair friends,

Here’s a simple, easy, and very handy way to use the new Finnabair Winter 2022 Mica Powders. They are one of my absolute favourite mixed media products because of a simple reason: they make it so very easy to get matching embellishments for art journaling or collage art, even lace and fabric. And that is truly wonderful!

Here’s how to do it. (And believe or not, this is easier done than said).

Take your chosen lace/silk/fabric stash and the powder you want to use, and some jar/plate/place to mix the powder. A water spray bottle is handy but not necessary.

If you are sure the project they end up, is not to be touched every five minutes (e.g. art journal page) you can use water only to mix the powder. However, if you are going to use the laces or fabric in a collage or canvas or any other project, you’ll be using water or mixed media products afterwards, you might want to consider using Soft Matte Gel. This will ensure the laces won’t bleed the colour into your project later.

Mix the powder with water of Soft Matte Gel.

Spraying the lace or fabric with water first to make sure it moist and absorb the colour evenly might be a good idea.

Dip the material into the powder mix gently. Depending on how strong colour you want, adjust the powder and the water amount.

After dipping it to the powder mix, spray some more water to the material and press it inside your palms as long as it take for the colour to blend.

Let dry.

Please note. Do NOT use a heating tool to dry synthetic fabrics, they’ll melt or burn!

A tip! If you want a sparkling project, add some Jewel Paste onto the materials, too!
