Even If.

There are moments in life that calls us to press the pause button. To sit down, to breathe, to take a good look in the mirror and ask Some Questions while at it.

Who do you see there? Are you comfortable with what you see? If the finish line is as close as it looks, was your life what you really wanted it to be? Are YOU what you wanted yourself to be?

It’s the Pink Month.

I thought I won’t talk about this, but then I thought it’d be ridiculous not to, especially because my story even has a happy ending – for now.

It’s just that the subject is so much talked about and then not nearly enough that I feel hesitant and urged to talk about it at the same time. But here it goes. (And you know me; I usually need a lot of words, so... Courage, dear heart, this, too, shall pass.)

I am one of those tediously conscientious people who examine their breasts every single month – and has done so for the past twenty plus years. Every. Single. Month. I owe it to myself.

A while ago I noticed everything wasn’t all right. I tried to explain it away and believe me, I am VERY GOOD at explaining things away to myself. I have all kinds of disabilities and chronic illnesses, so I’d spend my entire life in hospital waiting rooms if I didn’t master the voice of reason self-diagnosis thingy.
But this one I couldn’t explain in any way, so I called to the local health center and asked if this is something that should be checked.

Yes, they said, immediately.

Those of you who know me from a way back, might remember I don’t have what you’d call a warm and trusting relationship with Finnish health care system. No. It’s a concept I avoid at all costs. It took all my courage to call them and then, heaven forbid, to STEP INSIDE the walls of their kingdom.

However, for once I have only good things to say about the public health care system. The waiting times were so short they could not possibly have been any shorter, and everyone was so kind, so gentle, so… human.

And in the end, all was well. For now. But I was repeatedly told how important it was to come and check it, as it could have easily been something serious.

I have had my share of those pause moments in life. Because of them, I have learnt quite a lot about myself and about life and its fragility, so this experience was not as earthshaking as it could have been.
Still, during the past few weeks I felt my whole life was in a pause mode. Like the earth itself had tilted a bit. Nothing you could see outside, but like the whole universe had slightly cracked and left me fractioned.
I had time to think. A LOT. (And this comes from a person who may or may not have couple of universe’s worth of thoughts circling in her head 24/7.)

I thought about acceptance, mostly (also, about rocks, minerals, and molecules, because sometimes it is better to concentrate on Important Things instead of Serious Things), and I realized I am quite blessed. There is no other word for it.

I am where I want to be, I am who I want to be. Also, I hope and think I might be where and who I need to be. And that, my friends, is rather beautiful.

I have no desire to be ten years younger. I am who I am because I have my years’ worth of love, laughter, pain, and tears molding me.

I don’t need to be prettier, thinner; I am who I am just as I am and I love myself for it, with all the scars and bumpy, wobbly bits. And although it’s not been as easy to accept as my wobbly bits, I don’t need a glorious career to make me complete. I had quite a career on the making once, but life and brain injury happened, and I am a different person because of it all. It wasn’t easy, to accept it, but once I did, I got so much more I could have never, ever have hoped or dreamed, not in this life. So, yes, I am who I am, because all of this, and I feel incredibly, overwhelmingly blessed. (If that makes sense, which it does to anyone having similar experience.)

I also thought about how I have the most wonderful family; husband and children, I have a beautiful home, a lovely garden, and of course, Mr. Hemingway the cat. About how I am privileged enough to be able to have spent the whole summer collecting herbs, learning more about nature and its miracles and magic, about rocks, minerals, and gemstones, about all things visible and all things beyond.

How, if my life was about to end, it has been a good one. One filled with love, with warmth, with blessings.

But it does not erase the fact that this, too, was a rough, raw, shaking experience, and I feel just as rough, raw, and shaking, and will feel, for quite some time. But it is ok. Those feelings are there for a reason. And I have the gentlest healer Mr. Hemingway right next to me purring and licking my inner wounds, a husband who takes my hand and guides me through any kind of storms, children who hugs my invisible pain away, friends to talk everything through and more, God who is there, holding us all, with our fractures and wobbles.

Which brings me to the photo of my art journal page. During these weeks I also listened to music all the time, especially this all time favourite song of mine, Even If, by MercyMe.

"...But God, when You choose

To leave mountains unmovable

Oh give me the strength to be able to sing

It is well with my soul

I know You're able and I know You can

Save through the fire with Your mighty hand

But even if You don't

My hope is You alone

I know the sorrow, and I know the hurt

Would all go away if You'd just say the word

But even if You don't

My hope is You alone"

Even if.

Art Daily Cafe May 2022

Hello friends,

Little Thoughts may be little in size, but sometimes they can still speak in volumes. Here is an example. A tiny page with a single print, a single sentence, and two colours (ok, and lace, silk ribbon, and vintage silk yarn) may be small in size, but it has a heart of a giant. The lovely theme of the month underlined the beautiful, uplifting message.

I created the journal spread my tiny Little Thoughts art journal, the cover size approx. 7 cm x 10 cm. Here’s how I did it.

First, I glued a tiny vintage receipt the size of the whole journal spread on top of the coffee dyed paper, and primed the pages with Clear Gesso, crinkling and folding the receipt edges on the go. Then I added white Heavy Gesso here and there, and that was all I did with the actual pages.

Next, I dyed some silk ribbon, cheese cloth, and lace with green and pink Mica Powders from Vintage Roses and Golden Hour sets (a tutorial video of the process here: https://youtu.be/CCPbR9oRpGo ), and layered them onto the ages, together with a spring green vintage silk yarn, and glued the print and a stamped quote on top.

Then I glued some lace onto the edges of the pages and stitched mica dyed silk ribbon on top and used the leftover silk ribbon bits to get more dimension around the print and quote. The print looked a bit dull, but I did not change it, as was the idea of the month; don’t hide your mistakes but uplift them. So, with a white pen, I doodled some marks on top, and it did uplift and lighten the print!

Wishing, as always, all things gentle and beautiful,

Emilia

Captured Memories - Tags for Finnabair

Creating tags is always fun, but when you create tags using brand new products, it is double fun. I wanted to test the new Finnabair stencils and waxes and decided to make a quick & light mixed media tag collage, using salvaged and foraged tidal treasures.

Here’s the how.

The basic idea of each of the 6 tag is the same, the only slight alteration is, beside the trinkets, in the colour of the paints, because I wanted a series of tags that I could use either individually or as a tag collage of 6.

I had two hard cardboard tags and cut more similarish sized ones, and covered each with a different Finnabair tissue paper, using Soft Matte Gel for attaching and a light layer of white Heavy Gesso for priming.

Next, I painted the tags with Snow White Impasto paint, heavier layer on the edges and only a slightest touch to the middle. Then I mixed Impastos Pitch Black and Dark Chocolate and shadowed the edges using a wet brush and a sprayed, making the tags look worn out.

For the new stencils I used Paper texture Paste that brought out the stencil patterns beautifully and intricately and added just a hint of the black-brown Impasto mixture here and there, using spray and baby wipes to give only a soft darkening effect. Now I had 6 tag bases to start creating collages with.

I created the collages for each tag using Finnabair mechanicals, seashells, and driftwood, with moulds for most of them, too, attaching all with Heavy Body Gel. Next, I added some Mini and Mega Art Stones here and there around the nooks and crevices of the collages, using Soft Matte Gel as glue, and glued some Art Pebbles here and there, too.

Next step was to prime the collages with a light layer of gesso, and then paint them. Here’s where the alteration begun. I wanted to test how to achieve different colour worlds that would still fit together if I decided to put them all in my wall to make a memory collage; after all there are driftwood and seashells from our summer travels in each tag!

For the soft greyish blue ones (with new stencils Ghostwriter and Machinery as the background) I used a mixture of Impastos Snow White, Manor Blue, and Victorian Green to create a soft, misty morning beach look, when the storm clouds are rolling in and the tidal waves are revealing their treasures. I then added Liquid Acrylics Ink Black and Burnt Sienna for light shadowing. As a finishing touch, I added a hint of the new wax Ochre with waxes Vintage Silk and Vintage Gold here and there for highlighting and sprinkled some white acrylic paint on top.

For the lightly rusty beige ones (with new stencils Documented and Book of Numbers as the background) I tried to create a more dried look, like the salvaged objects would have been lying in the beach for some time, exposed for rain and salt and sunshine. For this, I added some Gold Metallic Flakes using Gilding Glue, and then painted the tags over with Impastos Linen, Dark Chocolate, and Pitch Black, with Rust Effect Pastes Brown and Red, and then added Liquid Acrylics Ink Black, Umber, Avocado Green, and Burnt Sienna. Again, for the finishing touches I used hint of the new waxes Ochre and Stained Wood, with Vintage Gold, Old White, and Vintage Silk, and sprinkled again some splashes of white and brownish paints and Sparks Chest of Gold on top.

For the sky-blue ones (with new stencils Bindweed Wallpaper and Victorian Tiles) I tried to get the look of calm evening at the sea, peaceful and majestic, seagulls flying low and waves rolling lazily to the shore. I painted the whole tag with all the trinkets and all with a mixture of Impastos Snow White, Manor Blue, Linen, and Cobalt, and highlighted and shadowed the collages with Liquid Acrylics Prussian Blue and Ink Black, with a hint of Burnt Sienna for warmth. As for the wax department, I used the new Ochre wax with Old White, Charcoal Black, Vintage Silk and Vintage Gold, to get the shimmering first or last rays of sun appearing in the horizon. And sprinkled again a bit of bluish and white splashes on top.

The tags took less time to create than it took time to write it all down. It was so fun to make them, as the new stencils are versatile and inspiring, and we had just got home from our summer beach wanderings with great hauls of driftwood and seashells for collage making! Have a go, too, and get inspired by the wonderful new stencils!

Finnabair Creative Team - Summer Vintage Tags

Somehow, we have made it to the summer, again. Celebrating life seems like a proper theme. I seriously think we all need a trophy or two, getting through all kinds of unexpected things life has thrown at us lately, don’t you think? Even if the trophy would be a tiny one, in form of a tag, we definitely deserve one!

Summer is this mysterious time capsule where between spring and autumn, time flies, whirling and whistling, and it seems that in one single breath, it’s gone. For me, summer is marveling the blooming peonies, collecting falling rose petals, pressing lavenders, devouring Scandinavian strawberry and whipped cream sponge cake with kids under the huge maple tree in our garden, listening to birdsong while reading on our glass veranda… Time both stops and vanishes and although crafting is always there, somehow there isn’t time to do all the crafting I’d love to. And I thought this might be the case for a lot of craft lovers; there simply isn’t time for it all.

Hence, I want to share with you this simple and easy, quick, and light happy tag project. You don’t need much time, energy, or materials for it – and basically, if you want to be in super lazy summer crafter mode, you can skip all the (two) mixed media steps, in which case the tag would take about 1,5 minutes to make, instead of five.

Here’s the how.

I cut a 6x6” scrapbook paper and cut it into half and into a tag shape. (Actually, I made two tags and used two different papers, but you know. Then I ripped a vintage book page into a suitable sized piece and using Soft Matte Gel, glued it to the tag. I covered the whole tag with a layer of Soft Matte Gel, too, as I wanted to be sure the papers won’t absorb paints unevenly.

Then, I added a nice dimensional layer, using Modeling paste and a Passiflora stencil. As I am such a vintage girl, I wanted to do my usual routine and painted the whole tag with a mix of Impasto paints Pitch Black and Dark Chocolate and wiped most off with a baby wipe.

Next step was to choose images for my two tags. For one, I used a print I had scanned from a vintage photo, and for another I used an image sticker from the Finnabair Words You Need Sticker Book. I glued the images in place and applied a coat of Soft Matte Gel on top, to protect the surface.

The basic tag was now ready, but a bit of decorating was still needed, so I took a piece of tea dyed cheese cloth and glued it underneath the image and stapled a paper flower (also tea dyed) and a very messy bunch of linen cord on top. Then I glued a heavy paper piece I had printed, with text (also tea dyed), underneath the image, too, and with a palette knife applied just a hint of Golden Dragon Effect Paste around the tag, to give it a sunshine effect. As the final touch, I dotted a couple of Diamond Art Pebbles here and there.

And that was it. It took longer for you read this than it would actually take to create a tag, so have a nice, cool glass of your favourite summer drink (mine is homemade strawberry and rhubarb juice), wear your comfiest summer dress, and have a relaxing creative moment, celebrating life, summer, and all things magical.

Mystic Pencil Silver Mask - Finnabair Creative Team Art

I knew I was in trouble, when my teenager asked me to alter a plastic mask for his Dj purposes. I knew I could say no, as he’s the one who has composed the most beautifully soft music for my videos; now it was payback time. But how could I do it, create something masculine, when everything I do has a habit of turning into some kind of shabby chic softness?

Well, I had no choice, had I? So, I gessoed the plastic mask, painted it over with Snow White Impasto paint (and chuckled while doing so, as Snow White and masculine aren’t the usual terms connected), and started to wonder what I should do next. I can assure you; it was a trial-and-error process for me…

I noticed that the layers started to slowly slip from the plastic surface, so I added another layer and sealed it with Soft Matte Gel. It helped for a while, but I wasn’t happy with the uneven surface and added a layer of Old White matte wax to cover it all. Then I painted strong shadows using Impastos Pitch Black, Dark Chocolate, and Snow White, to get more dimension and some structure into the mask and added another white Impasto layer on top with a very soft sponge.

Again, I didn’t like the outcome, way too creepily skull style for my liking, so I decided to add some waxes on top. I mixed Charcoal Black, Graphite, and Brushed Iron with some Rusty Brown to give it warmth and applied the wax to the mask. It was looking really good, but the layers started to move again under my brush and revealed white areas. What can a girl do but do some serious patching? So, I took my Silver Metallic Flakes and Gilding Glue and started my mixed media patching work, adding silver flakes everywhere there was white spots. And I could see in the instant the first flake softly landed onto the mask that now we had a winner and as perfect a match as perfect match can go.

I waited until I was absolutely certain that the waxes and the gilding glue were completely dry, and took a blending brush and brushed the flakes as hard as I could (keeping in mind the “moving”, thin plastic surface) until all the silver flakes kind of blended into the background. Then I took Charcoal Black, Old Silver, and Graphite waxes and very, very gently spread some onto the flakes, to make sure they really looked old and worn like an old statue and added black mica powder to highlight and shadow the nose and lip lines. Just to be on the safe side, I added a layer of Soft Matte Gel on top, to protect all the layers.

And… I did it! I managed to create something if not grungy masculine, then at least not-creepy-masculine-ish and it turned out to be one of my favourite projects of all because of its challenging difference!

P.S. Yes, my son loved his mask!
